(Reading time: 1 - 2 minutes)

It started and ended with children - side by side with creatures the west calls fearsome but Koreans call friends - white tigers especially! Doves were everywhere. Drones where happy points of light turning a dove into the Olympic rings. Nowhere were the militant drums that announced the start of the Chinese games - Korean drums are soft, are all about Ying and Yang. This ceremony was years in the planning - before the North Koreans announced their Olympic peace plan. The whole world was watching joyfully as the two Koreas marched in together but in his box, sitting just below the sister of Kim Jun Un, Mike Pence was fuming at the thought of peace and love and hoping for war and hate - but his lust was not satisfied - not even for one second. Love won. Hate lost. The children led us from ancient times to the present in a straight line from superstition to science, from animism to robotics. And then there was John Lennon's Imagine - sung by all the different styles of Korean singers - filling the peninsula with love and peace. Over and over they sang out - "Imagine all the people, living life in peace.." Two Korean hockey players - one from each side of the soon to be a historical curiosity DMZ - carried the torch on its last leg and handed it off to Yuna Kim who lit the Olympic flame. Let the games begin. Let the wars end. The Olympic games gave the ancient world a temporary truce. Let's hope these games give the Koreans at least a permanent peace.

Imagine
John Lennon, Plastic Ono Band
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace, you
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world, you
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one
